The church of San Francisco Javier was begun in the year 1726 and completed in 1738. In those years Formentera was victim to pirate attacks and this fortified church offered protection for the islands inhabitants as well as a place of worship. There were canons mounted on the ramparts. The square in front of the church is still a central point in the life of San Francisco and the town hall or ´ayuntamiento' is situated here. The square is the location for popular open air Jazz concerts which are held every Saturday night during the summer. The fiesta of the patron saint of San Francisco Javier is held each year on the 3rd of December. historic-Iglesia de San Francisco
